چکیده
Objective: Nuclear medicine technologists work under sig nificant radiation protection constraints. These constraints are based on the linear no-threshold (LNl) radiation para digm, which was developed in the 1960s and was based largely on the deleterious effects of radiation as they were understood at the time. More recently, the theory of radia tion hormesis, or a beneficial effect of low-level exposure to radiation, has gained recognition. This article reviews the history of attitudes toward radiation, describes the radiation hormesis hypothesis, examines some of the evidence that supports it, and suggests ways that radiation protection regulations might change if the hypothesis were to become accepted.

Radiation hormesis, or, could all that radiation be good for us?
OBJECTIVE Nuclear medicine technologists work under significant radiation protection constraints. These constraints are based on the linear no-threshold (LNT) radiation paradigm, which was developed in the 1960s and was based largely on the deleterious effects of radiation as they were understood at the time. متن کاملRadiation hormesis and adoptive response induced by low doses of limiting radiation
Ionizing radiation has long been known to produce detrimental biological effects. Although these harmful effects are the results of high doses of exposure, some other maladies such as mutation and cancer seems to be induced at low doses of exposure. In recent decades, however, some pioneer scientists have indicated that ionizing radiation like many other essential agents has toxic effects ...
متن کاملRadiation hormesis: the good, the bad, and the ugly.
Three aspects of hormesis with low doses of ionizing radiation are presented: the good, the bad, and the ugly. The good is acceptance by France, Japan, and China of the thousands of studies showing stimulation and/or benefit, with no harm, from low dose irradiation. This includes thousands of people who live in good health with high background radiation. The bad is the nonacceptance of radiatio...
متن کاملLook Different: Effect of Radiation Hormesis on the Survival Rate of Immunosuppressed Mice
Background: Hormesis is defined as the bio-positive response of something which is bio-negative in high doses. In the present study, the effect of radiation hormesis was evaluated on the survival rate of immunosuppressed BALB/c mice by Cyclosporine A.Materials and Methods: We used 75 consanguine, male, BALB/c mice in this experiment. The first group received Technetium-99m (3700Bq) and the seco...
متن کاملRadiation Hormesis: an Evolutionary Expectation Invalidating the Linear No-threshold (lnt) Premise
Organisms survive best, or show high fitness, in the habitats in which they most commonly occur, a phenomenon referred to as hormesis in the literature of toxicology. Examples of hormesis accumulate rapidly in the literature. However, a lack of underlying models has led many to doubt its existence, especially for ionizing radiation. The evolutionary model developed here indicates that all poten...
